“Give us this day our daily bread.” “Daily bread” may indeed include the physical needs of life, but it also recognizes our daily dependency upon God for all that we need to live the life of God’s Kingdom as Jesus describes it in the Sermon on the Mount. How can we live as salt and light (Matt 5:13-16)? How can we live a righteousness that exceeds the scribes and Pharisees (Matt 5:20)? How can we love our enemies (Matt 5:44)? Our need for daily bread is greater than we think. I can do nothing apart from you, O Holy Spirit.
