Devos of the Week: Acts 1:6-11

“Men of Galilee, why do you stand here looking into the sky?” Acts 1 shows clearly that disciples of Jesus can get caught up with trendy questions (vs. 6) or with miraculous showings or desired endings (vs. 10-11).  Jesus however, called his people to a mission (vs 7-8).  How do we stay focused on doing God’s mission?  – Guide us, Holy Spirit, to live your mission. Empower us to be your witnesses. Amen.

Leadership Devo of the week: Ascension – Acts 1:10f

“While he was going and they were gazing up toward heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. They said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up toward heaven?” The two messengers of God bring reproof to the disciples who gaze into heaven waiting for the Jesus and the Kingdom of God to come down.  They have been given a mission; it’s time to get to it. What keeps you for God’s call and mission?  Good things? Bad things? Give us grace, O Lord to get on with your work on earth until you come again.

Leadership Devos of the Week – John 17:1-3

“Now this is eternal life:  that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.” I have heard many pastors and Christian leader encourage Christians in the congregation to keep the main thing, the main thing.  I have heard many ideas on what the main thing is and how we should do many things.  It is easy however, to substitute Jesus’s “knowing God” with a host of other good mission statements and services.  Is knowing God and Jesus Christ whom he sent the main thing for you?  Why or why not?  – Knowing you, Jesus, there is no greater thing. Amen!

“Men of Galilee, why do you stand here looking into the sky?” Acts 1 shows clearly that disciples of Jesus can be tempted to get caught up with trendy questions (vs. 6), miraculous showings or desired endings (vs. 10-11).  Jesus however, called his people to a mission (vs 7-8).  How do we stay focused on doing God’s mission?  – Guide us, Holy Spirit, to live your mission. Leadership Devo of the Week – John 20:21-23

“Receive the Holy Spirit.  If you forgive anyone their sins, they are forgiven…” Many Christian pastors preach on “keeping the main thing the main thing.” What is the main thing for Jesus as he leaves the disciples in John’s gospel? What is the meaning and the significance of Jesus giving the promised Holy Spirit?  How is this connected to the forgiveness of sins and the ministry of Christ’s church/disciples? Do I keep Jesus’ main thing in my life and ministry? – Give us your heart for your world, Lord Jesus.
